DIY Running Medal Hanger

I’ve mentioned a few times that I run marathons and half marathons, but I’ve never mentioned my struggle with what to do with my medals or bibs. I used to have a rack that I hung the medals on, but it didn’t allow me to grow much. I decided to make a DIY running medal hanger that fits my space perfectly. Here’s what you’ll need to get started for 3 30″ shelves:

  • 3/4″ x 5″ wood, cut to six 1.5-2″ long pieces, and three 30″ (adjustable for whatever length you need)
  • Wood glue
  • 1 1/4″ wood screws (I picked ones like these)
  • 6 Keyhole Hangers
  • A drill with a drill bit just small enough to make the holes you need
  • Paint/primer or stain of your choice (pro tip: Erica’s post on choosing paint is really helpful)
  • Paint brush
  • Screws that fit the keyhole hangers (a #8 screw should work)
  • Dry wall anchors (if necessary)

Start with cutting the wood down to size and wood gluing the 1 1/2″ pieces to the ends of the 30″ pieces. The reason for these pieces is to create space between the board and the wall for you to wrap the medal around.

Mark out the center of the 1 1/2″ pieces with pencil and outline where the keyhole hanger would go. Drill out the space for the screw to insert into the keyhole hanger.

Attach the keyhole hangers using the screws that came with them. Then prime and paint the whole shelf (or sand and stain).

Measure out where you want to attach the hangers to the wall. I recommend using painters tape and a level to get them straight. (It doesn’t look straight in the photo but I promise it’s straight!)

The way you hang the medals is by putting the top of the medal ribbon at the top of the shelf, wrapping the medal around, and letting the weight of the medal put pressure on the top of the ribbon. Then, adjust so the medal hits where you prefer on the shelf (towards the top, middle or bottom). And you’re all set!

There you have it! A DIY Medal Hanger that can be customized or adjusted to your needs. These don’t have to be for running medals either and can be customized for any type of long/hanging thing (like necklaces or pendants).
