Well. The last week has been A WEEK. If you’ve been following the news, you’ve probably heard about what has been going on in Texas, where Amanda and I both live. TLDR: a massive winter storm drove up the state’s energy needs, and energy generating facilities that weren’t winterized couldn’t handle the load. A lot people in the state lost power for days, including me. Then the water treatment facilities didn’t have the energy they needed to function, so we lost water. Greg and I were fortunate and made it through without any pipes freezing and bursting, but a lot of our friends and family weren’t so lucky. We were originally planning on posting this lavender rose lemonade recipe last week, but couldn’t because of the power situation. It seems ironic to be sharing it today, but here we are. When life gives you lemons…
I originally created this lavender rose lemonade recipe for Lit Sh*t, the podcast I cohost, but it was too good not to share here as well! For each episode of the podcast, I create a cocktail or drink inspired by the book we’re talking about. This recipe was inspired by Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson. It’s YA, so we went with a nonalcoholic option. The main character, Claudia, and her best friend, Monday, are frequently mentioned having matching things (notebooks, backpacks, etc.) in pink and purple, hence the lavender and rose flavors.
This lemonade is flavored and sweetened with a lavender and rose simple syrup. Your house will smell lovely while it’s steeping. You can often find food-grade dried lavender at grocery stores. I’ve gotten it at Whole Foods before, but I also order it from Amazon. Rose water is usually available in the baking aisle of grocery stores, next to the extracts. It’s a great ingredient for dipping your toes in the world of Persian and Indian desserts!
