What’s On My Mind 1.2.2021

Happy New Year! I’m excited to get to share the first What’s on My Mind post of 2021. I love the feeling of a fresh start a new year brings, especially after a year like 2020. I’ve been spending the last week taking it easy and doing nothing, which has been nice and recharging. I don’t very often sit in silence and let my mind wander, but I have been trying to do that some this week to make space. I had a lot of creative ideas in November and December, and now I’m in a headspace to try to figure out what I want to take on next. I’m trying to give myself room to daydream.

Outside of that, I have a few things I’ve been loving this week to share:

  • Greg and I binge-watched Bridgerton on Netflix and really enjoyed it. I think the production-set design, cinematography, casting, and scoring-are what really made it for me. The story would feel like a generic period romance without all that, but it’s so well done. Some of my friends really love the Bridgerton book series and said the first one (which season 1 is based on) is actually their least favorite, so I’m trying to decide if I’m going to read them.
  • We have three mature Meyer lemon trees in our backyard, so the last two weeks before Christmas have been about figure out what to do with this year’s lemon harvest. We gave a ton away to friends and family. We have about two gallons of lemon juice in our fridge. I made lemon curd using this recipe from Epicurious and used it as the filling of a layer cake. The most exciting project, though, has been making limoncello. I have about a gallon of limoncello I’m making using this recipe from Kitchn. I’m super excited to get to share it with friends and family once it’s ready!
  • A few years ago I got really interested in perfume after reading a memoir called Coming to My Senses. I fell down an internet rabbit hole that led from a blog called Now Smell This to the discovery of a British perfume brand called 4160 Tuesdays. From there I found what I thought could be my signature scent, a rose-focused perfume called Raw Silk and Red Roses. I was about to order a bottle when all of a sudden I couldn’t find it at any US perfume retailers. I’ve been checking in on it here and there for the last year and a half, and it finally popped up at a small perfume company based in Philadelphia called Perfumology. I ordered a bottle and am so excited to get it in the mail. The moral of this story: let yourself fall down rabbit holes around things that pique your curiosity. It can create lovely adventures. That book opened up a whole new world of scent experiences I didn’t know were out there.
  • My most recent dinner love: this Smoky Potato and Kale Soup from Half Baked Harvest. Except I subbed spinach for the kale because I really don’t like kale. It was quick, one-pot, and delicious-perfect for cold winter evenings.
